Preparing for College in High School

Excel in school: The better you do in school, the more attractive you look to potential college admission officers. Do well in school. Join study groups and don’t procrastinate.

Take notes in class. Do your homework. Spend time learning. Your future is at stake. Do well!

Enroll in classes that prepare you for college: All college bound students should take college preparatory classes. Before you register for classes at the beginning of the 9th grade, make a four year plan that prepares you for college. Plan to take at least four years of English, foreign language, math, and natural and social sciences.

Following minimum graduation standards will not get you into college: Look at the California minimum graduation standards, which are very similar to the standards in other states. Compare these minimum graduation standards to the minimum admission standards at California's two university systems.

You must take at least two additional classes to be eligible for California colleges. Even if you are eligible to graduate from high school, you may not be eligible to attend a four year university in the California public school system!

Even if you are apprehensive about attending college, you should take a course curriculum that prepares you for college. You never want to be in the situation where you desire to attend a college but have not taken the correct classes and therefore are not eligible.

If you are confused about minimum standards for four year college admissions, talk to a guidance counselor
